BROADWAY: HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN MUSICAL
About once a decade during the century after Oscar Hammerstein and Jerome Kern wrote the first integrated musical, Show Boat (1927), the inheritors of their tradition shocked Broadway with what this course posits are "turning point musicals" -- individual productions that completely changed the public idea of what a musical play was and could be. From Oklahoma!, the first, to Hamilton, the most recent, these thunderclap musicals form the backbone of the course. Students will listen to a number of cast albums and watch filmed stage productions including Carousel and Company, among others.
