Between the years 1988 and 1997, Hollywood filmmakers, many of them immigrants from Europe and East Asia, reinvented the action film as a lean story-delivery system inspired equally by the best of the Golden Age and by German expressionist cinema.  We will watch Die HardSpeedFace/Off and others to examine their impact as genuine, unconventional works of art with more beneath the surface than an initial viewing reveals, and which inspired such contemporary directors as George Miller, Martin Scorsese, and Quentin Tarantino.
